America has been engaged in continuous combat operations around the globe for the greater part of two decades, and our veterans have carried the burden of these, our country’s longest wars, far beyond what anyone could have asked of them. Without complaint they have marched time and again into the gauntlet of battle, and too often return home with psychological injuries that go mostly untreated until it is too late. This often manifests in the form of substance abuse, domestic violence, and involvement in the criminal justice system. One in ten returning veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been arrested and jailed since coming home. That we have failed these brave men and women who continue to suffer from the trauma of war is a stain on our nation’s honor. We can do better.
